The use of birds for mapping natural grasslands in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil

Abstract

Abstract Mapping natural grasslands using satellite images faces challenges due to the similarity of this vegetation physiognomy with pasturelands planted with exotic grasses and crops. This study evaluates the use of historical records of bioindicator grassland birds to identify these areas in São Paulo, Brazil. Six bird species were selected. The results show that, of the 44 locations analyzed that had historical records, 43% indicate suppression of natural grasslands, while 20% are in Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs). It is concluded that, although useful, the methodology has limitations due to the rarity of the species and the loss of habitat, highlighting the importance of conserving PPAs for the conservation of remaining natural grasslands.
