First record of a bird in the stomach contents of Serrasalmus maculatus (Kner, 1858) in the Upper Paraná Basin
Abstract
Abstract This article reports the first recorded occurrence of a bird in the stomach contents of Serrasalmus maculatus (Kner, 1858) in a reservoir environment in the Ipanema National Forest, São Paulo, Brazil, Upper Paraná River basin. The specimen, a mature female measuring 19.7 cm standard length, contained 12.6 mm³ of Nannopterum brasilianum feathers and 6.48 mm³ of fish fragments in its stomach. Local environmental conditions, slightly alkaline water, muddy substrate, and dense marginal vegetation, promote strong connectivity between aquatic and terrestrial habitats, creating opportunities for occasional trophic interactions. This record highlights the opportunistic feeding behavior of the species and expands knowledge of its trophic ecology in lentic environments.Published
